Grandmother's Terrazzo

We were hired to replace a 1954 terrazzo floor. We spent four months restoring it, then designed the rest of the house around it.

A 1954 bungalow with an original in-situ terrazzo floor in ochre and oxblood, poured by a crew whose names are on the back of a photograph in the family album.

Grandmother's Terrazzo, Waltair Uplands, Visakhapatnam, an interior.

The client's instruction was to take it out. We asked for two weeks to try polishing a square metre. The square metre changed the project.

Everything else in the house now answers to that floor: the wall colour was mixed against it, the brass was chosen for the ochre, and the new joinery is deliberately quiet so the floor stays the loudest thing in the room. The only new terrazzo is in the bathrooms, cast by a workshop in Athangudi to match.
