The client is a surgeon who operates four days a week and sleeps badly. The brief was, verbatim, 'I want to come home and hear nothing.'

The lower floor behaves like a normal home: stone, glass, a kitchen that clatters. The stair is the border. Above it, every surface is chosen for what it absorbs: cork underlay beneath oak, wool on the walls behind linen, doors on soft-close everything, no downlight that hums.

We measured 42 dB in the master bedroom at 9pm on a Friday. The street outside was 68.
